Choose the last intentional unlock
Pick a clear closing cue ten or fifteen minutes before you want to sleep. It might be plugging in the phone, turning on Sleep Focus, or placing it face down beside the bed. After that cue, use the phone only for something you named in advance, such as setting an alarm or answering an urgent family message.
This boundary is smaller than a complete evening ban, which is why it can survive ordinary life. Necessary uses remain available. Open-ended feeds wait until tomorrow. The aim is not a perfect night. It is one moment when you decide that the day is closing.
Pray before you are exhausted
Do not save prayer for the final seconds before sleep if that is when you always lose the words. Pray at the closing cue, while you can still pay attention. Sitting on the edge of the bed, standing by the charger, or turning off the main light can all become a simple invitation to begin.
Prayer in bed is still prayer. Posture is not the test. What helps is moving the practice a few minutes earlier, so it is a real part of the evening rather than one more task you failed to finish.
Use four honest lines
You do not need a polished devotional. Give the day four short sentences and leave space after each one.
- Thank God for one gift you actually noticed.
- Tell God one burden you are still carrying.
- Ask for help with one person, choice, or need.
- Release the night: God, I entrust what I cannot finish to you.
Let the phone keep the boundary
On iPhone, Sleep Focus can silence notifications on a schedule while allowing chosen people and apps. Screen Time downtime can add another boundary for feeds or games. Keep emergency contacts, health tools, alarms, and anything needed for care available.
A recent adult study found an association between screen use in bed and later sleep timing and shorter sleep duration. That does not mean one setting will fix sleep. It does mean that moving an open-ended feed out of bed is a reasonable experiment, especially when the same feed is also displacing prayer.
If you are already scrolling
Do not start a shame-filled argument with yourself at 12:30. Close the current app, put the phone face down or beyond reach, and pray one honest sentence. A small return is better than promising a flawless routine tomorrow.
Before bed tonight, choose one short Psalm or Gospel paragraph for tomorrow. Then set the closing cue and try the four-line prayer once. The practice is complete even if it lasts only two minutes. What matters is that the feed does not receive the final word by default.
