Angelus prayer times: 6 am, noon and 6 pm

The Angelus is traditionally prayed three times a day: at 6 in the morning, at noon and at 6 in the evening, when church bells once rang for it. Pray Shield puts the Angelus at these three times on its daily prayer timeline and can ring a quiet bell with the midday notification.

The three Angelus times

  • 6 am – at the start of the day
  • 12 noon – in the middle of work or school
  • 6 pm – as the day turns toward evening

The Angelus prayer

V. The Angel of the Lord declared unto Mary.
R. And she conceived of the Holy Spirit.
Hail Mary…

V. Behold the handmaid of the Lord.
R. Be it done unto me according to thy word.
Hail Mary…

V. And the Word was made flesh.
R. And dwelt among us.
Hail Mary…

V. Pray for us, O holy Mother of God.
R. That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.

Let us pray. Pour forth, we beseech thee, O Lord, thy grace into our hearts, that we, to whom the Incarnation of Christ thy Son was made known by the message of an angel, may by his Passion and Cross be brought to the glory of his Resurrection, through the same Christ our Lord. Amen.

In Eastertide

From Easter Sunday to Pentecost the Church prays the Regina Caeli instead of the Angelus. Pray Shield takes the Angelus off its timeline during these weeks.

The Angelus in Pray Shield

  • The Angelus stands at 6 am, noon and 6 pm on the prayer timeline of the day, next to morning prayer, grace at meals, the Divine Mercy Chaplet at 3 pm and evening prayer.
  • An optional Angelus bell rings quietly with the midday notification. Silent mode keeps it silent.
  • The full text is in the prayer book of traditional prayers, free to pray anytime.

Fitting the prayer into ordinary life

6 am, noon and 6 pm are traditional times, not a requirement to pray at an exact minute. Make sensible allowances for work, care and safety. In Eastertide the Regina Caeli recalls Christ’s Resurrection.
