Step by step
Open your photo
In Photos, open the image you want to use. Tap Edit, then Markup.
Add the verse as text
In the Markup toolbar, tap the plus button and Add Text. Enter the verse and its reference, adjust the font and color, and save with Done. Labels can vary with your iOS version.
Choose the wallpaper
Open Settings > Wallpaper > Add New Wallpaper > Photos and select your edited image. Check that the verse is readable in the preview. Tap Add, then choose Set as Wallpaper Pair or customize the Home Screen separately.
Adjust your Lock Screen
Touch and hold the Lock Screen, then tap Customize below the wallpaper you want. Check the verse alongside the clock and notifications. If needed, reposition the text in the photo and select the edited image again.
Add widgets if useful
During customization, tap Add Widgets and tap or drag an available widget into place. Close the selection and finish with Done. A Bible verse appears there only if the relevant app supports it.
Make the verse easy to read
Choose an uncluttered image and a text color that stands out. Leave space for the clock, date and notifications. The verse is part of the image: edit it in Photos when you want different words. The wallpaper editor is not a free text field for Bible verses.
Psalm 23 or Matthew 11 can be starting points. Read the whole passage in your Bible and copy words only from a translation you have permission to use. Including the reference helps you return to the context. A short excerpt should preserve the passage’s meaning.
How Pray Shield complements the reminder
Pray Shield uses Apple’s Screen Time to show a pause with a Bible verse and prayer before your selected distracting apps open. App selection is free; Bible and prayer functions are available in the optional Plus subscription. Alongside the visible reminder on your Lock Screen, that moment before opening an app can invite a deliberate pause.
This wallpaper guide uses Apple’s Photos and wallpaper tools. It does not depend on a Pray Shield wallpaper feature or Lock Screen widget. Learn how Pray Shield works.
Carry the verse into your day
When you pick up your phone, read the line attentively and decide what you intend to do next. Our Bible verses for phone habits can help you choose a passage. The Lectio Divina guide offers a way to turn a short passage into unhurried prayer. For a broader review of the day, try the daily Examen prayer.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need an extra app for a verse wallpaper?
No. You can add text with Markup in Photos and select the edited image as your wallpaper.
Can I type a verse directly into the wallpaper editor?
For this method, add the verse to the photo first. Lock Screen customization does not provide a general text field for your own Bible verse.
Why is my verse cropped or covered?
The image crop, clock and notifications can affect readability. Check the preview and reposition the text in the photo if necessary.
Can I use a Bible verse widget instead?
Yes, if an installed app offers a suitable Lock Screen widget. Check the entries available under Add Widgets; not every app supports this feature.
Does Pray Shield put the verse on my Lock Screen?
This guide uses Apple’s Photos and wallpaper tools. Pray Shield complements that with a Screen Time pause containing a Bible verse and prayer before selected distracting apps; no Lock Screen feature is promised here.
